Kota Kinabalu: The developer of the Suria Sabah shopping mall, Makamewah Sdn Bhd, is confident of securing full tenancy in the building despite the current global economic crisis.
Its Chairman cum Managing Director, Humphrey Tan Koon Yee said they had received a lot of enquiries from potential investors and tenants to occupy the shopping lots.
"A lot of potential tenants are interested in our lots. And I believe they are holding on to their decisions until the last minute.
"In fact, so far, about 30 per cent of the shopping lots have been leased out and I believe after Tuesday's event, more will come," he said.
Tan said this in a press conference after Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim witnessed the handing over of the anchor parcel in Suria Sabah to MetroJaya and the signing of a letter of offer with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) here Tuesday.
Tan represented the company while MetroJaya was represented by its Chairman Dato' Ahmad Khairummuzammil and GSC by its Chief Executive, Koh Mei Lee.
The physical completion of the shopping mall will be in July this year and it is expected to be operational, tentatively on Oct 18.
According to Tan, the RM500 million mall which sits on an11-acre site, includes a 120-room 4-star hotel.
"Suria Sabah is strictly a shopping paradise with 70 per cent of the retail space allocated for fashion and consumer durables, while the balance is for food and beverage as well as entertainment.
"The 700,000 sq. ft building comes with 2,100 parking bays spread over four floors," he said.
Given its strategic location and controlled tenant mix, Tan is optimistic that Suria Sabah will be another must-visit place in the city centre.
